Adventures in a Doomed World: Session 31

Image
I'm playing a mashup of  Scarlet Heroes  and  Basic Fantasy RPG  with a few supplements to turn it into a solo fantasy hexcrawl in the world of Eilobar, a doomed land entering its end times. I'm using the  Level 0 Character Tumbler , Hexcrawl Adventures, Mythic GME 2nd Edition and some homebrew rules. The characters started as level 0 peasants and have since levelled up to become heroes. Introduction Last time the party met with Thiri the dwarven scholar in Seethorpe and gave him the goblin king's amulet with its strage sigil. He was certain it was the symbol of a powerfully evil creature related to the Nine Kings of Hell, and sent them looking for clues in the demonic temple near the town. The Adventure Stilda, Cyna, Bryne and Ellyn set off on horseback into the hills northeast of Seethorpe. They spend an uneventful day travelling, but along the way Bryne warns the others, "I've read about the Three Scourges in books you know. I don't think you should...

Introduction Life has got in the way of my solo RPG gaming this year but I've finally found time to return to the world of Eilobar. As a recap: In an era long after the fabled Age of Heroes, peasants Stilda, Cyna and Bryne decided to fight back against the monsters that were plagueing their village, Keyham. They slew Mothric, the local goblin dungeonmaster along with a goblin king who had taken another nearby village. Both were in possession of a mysterious rune. Yormath, the wizard of Keyham didn't recognise this rune but suuggested they show his old friend Thiri, a d...

The Wretched

Image
Introduction It's been a while since I played a journalling RPG ( Thousand Year Old Vampire last summer) so I thought I'd finally try out The Wretched by Chris Bissette. I got it in a bundle on itch.io but the thing that always stopped me from trying it out was that it needs what Bisette carefully calls a "tumbling block tower" - he means Jenga. I thought it was a weird idea to design a game that relied on you owning a whole other game first, but just recently I noticed he has a link  in the rulebook explaining how to simulate the odds of a Jenga tower and how likely it is to fall. All you need is a hundred D6s. Luckily we've got Tabletop Simulator so I can easily spawn in that many dice. To take a block from the tower you simply roll all the dice and remove any that come up as ones. You do that each time you're told to remove a block, and eventually you'll lose all your dice, sending the tower crashing down. My slightly wonky grid of dice You also need ...

Mythras: A Tournament in the World of Dark Sun - Fight 1

Image
Introduction I've been reading the Mythras rulebook because I wanted to try out another game with crunchy tactical combat after the alternating fun and tedium of running a fight in The Riddle of Steel . This time instead of just trying out one fight I thought why not do a whole tournament with sixteen people (because I'm mad, obviously). I'd been watching YouTube videos about D&D's old Dark Sun campaign setting and thought it would make a great backdrop for a brutal tournament of mortal combat, so I got some Dark Sun materials from Drivethru RPG and got reading. Athas is a post-apocalyptic fantasy world where abuse of magic has ruined the planet, turning it into a huge desert where civilisation is crowded into city states run by despots, powerful sorcerer kings who keep a tight grip on the exclusive use of magic. Metal is rare and expensive, with most armour and weapons made from cheaper materials. Slavery is rife, halflings are cannibals and the sun will kill you...

Cepheus Deluxe: The Bounty Hunter - Session 2

Image
Abandoned gas station, Arrix Province, Siento 1 Introduction I haven't had much time to play RPGs lately as real life has got in the way. I managed to make some time though. In the first session, former space marine Arman Doyle intervened in a hostage situation and helped a bounty hunter take down a criminal. The bounty hunter, Abe Clarke, gave him the details of a man called Frank Hancock. Some kind of fixer in a loose network of bounty hunters, Doyle will go and see this Hancock guy for a meeting. I just bought Mythic Game Master Emulator 2nd Edition  so we'll be using that for the first time here. The Chaos Factor mentioned below determines how likely it is that something unexpected will happen in the scene. We're starting it at 5 which is standard when using Mythic. If things go according to plan it'll get lower, and if Arman starts to lose control over the situation it'll creep higher, causing more random and unexpected events. The Adventure Scene 2 | Krinnai...

Cepheus Deluxe: The Bounty Hunter - Session 1

Image
Downtown Krinnai, Siento 1 Introduction In session zero I made our Cepheus Deluxe character, Captain Arman Doyle, formerly of the Imperial Space Marine Corps but now washed up and living in a small apartment in Krinnai, the capital city of Siento 1. The planet is in the grip of a fascist regime and not a very nice place to live. The Adventure Scene 1 | Krinnai, Siento 1 | 3023.05.02 | Account balance Cr44,650 Arman wakes up around 10am, hungover, and finds his fridge is empty. He showers, dresses in his dark grey jeans, a white shirt and leather jacket then heads down to the apartment block's underground garage and jumps in his car. It's a short drive to the local convenience store. On the way there he stops at a traffic light and the driver in the lane next to him is pulled out of his car and beaten by the police. They don't even ask him any questions. That kind of thing has been happening ever since he arrived on Siento 1. A few minutes after arriving at the store he...

Cepheus Deluxe: The Bounty Hunter - Session 0

Image
The Tarantula Nebula (NASA/JPL-Caltech/Cornell University and University of Leiden) Introduction I recently bought the Cepheus Deluxe rulebook print on demand edition from Drivethru RPG. It's a pretty good quality book with a nice weight to the pages. The cover art looks pixellated though, like it was made at 72 DPI and low resolution, and the layout design leaves something to be desired, with a "futuristic" font for headings that really just makes it look dated. In my day job I'm a motion graphic designer so I'm a bit of snob when it comes to these things, but the book is structured well and the rules are easy to read. You also get a character sheet, ship sheet, blank sector and subsector maps, planet sheet, and character creation worksheet that you fill in during character generation. I've also got the Bounty Hunter Handbook by Moontoad Publishing so I wanted to try making a solo bounty hunter character. I just finished a few sessions of solo Cepheus Engine...
