Scarlet Heroes: Night's Dark Terror Part 1
Campaign Day 1
Date: Nytdain (Friday), 1st of Thaumont, Spring 1000 AC
After returning Langrim the Transmuter's apprentice to him and bidding them farewell, Beremud travelled East along the Skieg river until he arrived in the small city of Kelven. Five days after leaving Langrim's tower he moors his boat in the docks, paying the mooring fee of 5 SP per day.
He finds an antique dealer in the city and sells his three antique tapestries, the electrum bracelet, gold earring and silver necklace studded with tourmalines. He makes a total of 263 GP and 4 CP. He opens an account with the Merchants' Guild and deposits all his money except 200 GP, which comes to 1005 GP, 9 SP and 10 CP. There will be a 5% withdrawal fee when he takes money out of the account.
Going to make quick brief notes for this adventure.
NIGHT'S DARK TERROR
While drinking in a tavern Beremud is approached by Stephan who's looking for sellswords to travel to his brother Pyotr's homestead in the Dymrak forest to the East. There they will collect several white horses Pyotr recently tamed and take them to the Callari Elven settlement Rifllian, where he hopes to sell them.
He has arranged passage to Misha's Ferry on a trader's riverboat. This will put them within a day's ride of the homestead (named Sukiskyn). The pay is only 100 GP but since Beremud has taken a vow to help others in need for a year, he accepts the low offer.
Stephan tells him the merchant Kalanos will meet him in a week's time and tells him where the boat will be moored. He also mentions that Beremud might want to invest in a bow or something that could shoot at any land-based attackers. They shake hands and Stephan sets off for Sukiskyn himself.
Beremud spends a week relaxing, praying and meditating. He also buys a repeating crossbow and a quiver with 20 bolts, plus enough rations for 10 days of travel, and speaks to people at the docks about selling the old fishing boat that served him so well along the Skieg river.
He gets D4 offers for it: 3
It's so battered after his adventures that he can only get up to 10% of its value of 5000 GP. Here are the offers:
- 4% (200 GP)
- 1% (50 GP)
- 4% (200 GP)
He sells it to the first man for 200. After the week is up the 200 GP is down to 148 GP and 55 CP. He deposits it all except 100 GP, which he takes with him for expenses. The night before he leaves he prays for the spells Protection From Evil, Cure Light Wounds and Bless.
Campaign Day 2
Date: Loshdain (Saturday), 2nd of Thaumont, Spring, 1000 AC
Switching to bullet points for speed.
- Beremud meets Kalanos at his riverboat. He introduces him to his eight sailors and three men at arms who signed up for the job alongside him. The men at arms are Gyles, Rewyn and Enna, a female man at arms. They have bows and shortswords.
- They set off East along the Volaga River, but after a few hours the boat hits a heavy chain strung across the river from bank to bank and can go no further. "Ambush!" Kalanos shouts, just as a huge group of armed men emerge from the treeline on the North bank. Eight bowmen immediately loose arrows at the boat, and Gyles and three crewmen are killed.
- Beremud roars and quickly lets off four bolts from his repeating crossbow which hit four bowmen. He and the surviving sellswords run to the gunwhale and crouch down. His comrades loose arrows towards the shore then duck down, but their arrows miss. Meanwhile Kalanos and the remaining sailors get below deck.
- Twelve men on the bank draw daggers and grip them in their teeth before diving into the water and swimming towards the boat, but they've got a fair way to go yet. Another volley of arrows hits the boat but Beremud, Enna and Rewyn are well hidden behind the gunwhale and aren't hit.
- While Beremud reloads his crossbow Rewyn peeks over the gunwhale and spies a man with better armour than the others, armed with a bow, sword and shield. He carefully takes aim and shoots the man in the eye, dropping him on the riverbank.
- The swimmers are halfway across now but Beremud knows he needs to take out the remaining archers before shooting at them. He manages to get one shot off before having to take cover again. It hits an archer in the chest and kills him.
- The twelve men have almost reached the boat now. The three archers shoot more arrows at the three people on the boat but they all miss.
End of session. Beremud gains 1 XP.
- Beremud sees the swimmers are almost at the boat so he slings his crossbow over his back and draws his mace. Rewyn and Enna loose arrows but miss their targets.
- The twelve men reach the boat and start scrambling up the hull to the deck. While the men at arms are distracted by this one of the sailors opens the hatch in the deck and creeps up behind Enna armed with a dagger. At the last moment she looks round and ducks out of the way of a stab that would have killed her. More arrows fly overhead.
- The battle rages on like this and sadly the traitor sailor stabs Enna to death and one of the boarders cuts down Rewyn. Beremud refuses to go down despite being stabbed twice by the traitor while he fights the others. He casts Cure Light Wounds and Bless, eventually killing all enemies on the deck.
- Next he takes cover from three surviving archers and calls to Kalanos to aid him with a bow, but the merchant refuses to come out (DC13 CHA check failed), so he reloads his repeating crossbow and shoots down all three of them.
End of session. Beremud gains 1 XP.
- Beremud hastily patches up his wounds with bandages (+2 HP) and checks on Kalanos and the surviving sailors, who are all unharmed. They drop anchor and the sailors get busy unhooking the chain and let it drop down to the riverbed. Beremud and Kalanos search the bodies, finding 33 GP and a dagger+1 on the traitor sailor.
- They find strange marks on the wrists of the corpses - brands in the shape of manacles. Neither man has seen this before. They wrap the bodies of Gyles, Rewyn, Enna and the fallen sailors in sheets and stow them in the cargo hold, and continue along the river.
- Late afternoon: They reach Misha's Ferry, but Misha isn't at home. Kalanos mentions she goes out hunting with her bear.
- Beremud waits in Misha's cabin but she still doesn't come home. The bear does however. Beremud watches it from the window as it rampages angrily around, bleeding. Eventually it wanders off into the gloom. Beremud eats a ration, lays his bedroll on the cabin floor, prays for Cure Light Wounds x2 and Bless x1, then goes to sleep. He is woken a couple of times by wolves howling, but he checks the door is bolted and goes back to sleep.
Campaign Day 3
Date: Soladain (Sunday), 3rd of Thaumont, Spring 1000 AC
- Beremud heals 4 HP in the night, and upon waking casts Cure Light Wounds to heal 4 more bringing him to 12/19. He leaves Misha's cabin and follows the road south into the forest until it branches to the east, and he follows this road to Sukiskyn.
- In the evening he sees Sukiskyn on the plains at the edge of the woods, but the gatehouse and barn are on fire! In a clearing to the north is a large crowd of green humanoids with weapons, maybe orcs or goblins. While he's approaching the homestead a group of goblins leaps out of the undergrowth at the edge of the forest and attacks him.
End of session. Beremud gains 1 XP.
- Beremud succeeds on a DC13 WIS check to see the ambushing goblins. He shoots at them and kills some but is hit by two flying spears before he can close in and kill the others. Two survivors flee back to the treeline.
- He bandages his wounds then looks up to see seven more goblins mounted on large wolves racing towards him. A man calls from the gatehouse of the homestead up ahead, so he sprints over there as fast as he can and is let in by the man and a woman who close the gates behind him.
- Now inside the palisade, Beremud looks around and sees five more goblins charging through a breach in the palisade next to the burning barn. He and the man slay them together then he retreats through the double doors of the main building with the man and woman.
- Beremud meets the other survivors including Pyotr, Stephan's brother, who brings him up to speed with the situation - other homesteads have been attacked in recent weeks and there are three clans of goblins involved, but one of the clans stole the horses during this attack and ran off with them, which seemed to anger the others.
- Pyotr and Beremud assign the surviving homesteaders to defensive positions around the building, using ranged weapons. Kuzma the elderly cleric casts Cure Light Wounds on Beremud, healing 4 HP.
- Beremud assists the men in taking furniture apart and boarding up the doors and windows on the ground floor, reinforcing them. During this time the house comes under attack from sling stones, with windows breaking. Someone spots a group of Redblade goblins lying in the undergrowth in front of the treeline to the north and shouts out their position. Everyone hurls sling stones, arrows and bolts at them, killing three. The others quickly retreat back into the forest.
- The drumming and chanting continues in the forest until later in the night two large Wolfskull goblins charge out of the western woods on dire wolves, leading ten more goblins on foot, heading towards the bridge. At the same time eight Redblade goblins approach out of the trees to the north. The defenders loose missiles at all the enemies they can see, and Kuzma casts Bless, affecting everyone on the upper floor. Beremud shoots down the two mounted goblins whose dire wolves run around the yard looking for victims, while the others shoot more goblins causing the survivors of both groups to flee back into the woods. Beremud and the others pelt the dire wolves with missiles until they too are scared off into the forest.
- End of session. Beremud gains 1 XP.
