Mythras: Tarnen the Wanderer Part 2

Let's just get right into playing this time, we can generate the world as we go from here. Tarnen is roughly 20 miles south of the small city of Queenstead, having left his hometown (to be detailed later) and set off for the nearest settlement. One quick note is that I moved "The Beast" from the characters list to the threads list as on closer inspection of the tables it makes more sense for it to be treated as a kind of plot thread than a character.

Scene 1 | The Downs | Year 645, 1st of 7th Month | Chaos Factor: 5
Threads: Find work in Queenstead, The Beast
Characters: Family, Ally 1, Ally 2, Contact 1

Tarnen has had an uneventful journey north so far, through the region known as the Downs. It's mid morning on the first official day of summer and it's warm and pleasant, with almost no clouds in the sky. (I'm using the simplified weather tables in D30 Sandbox Companion).

He's following a well-worn track towards the city so we don’t need any skill rolls or Mythic fate questions today. Just a random encounter roll (1 in 6): 6! An encounter to start the campaign.

I roll another 6, this time on the Road Encounters table of D30 Sandbox Companion. We’re in a scattered population density area so the result is: Remains, unknown humanoid 5-6’ tall.

Tarnen approaches a corpse by the side of the road. No carrion birds peck at it for whoever it was, they’ve been dead a long time. So long that he can’t even make out whether or not it was human in life. Tarnen kneels down next to it and examines the thing.

Tarnen makes a Peception check (25%): 95. Failure.

He’s unable to determine anything much about this creature: what it was, how it died.

Fate question: Are there any items on the corpse? (Unlikely)

19: Yes

Is it money? (Unlikely)

93: Exceptional no. It must be something non-materialistic and more spiritual, like the holy symbol of a religion. We’ll go with that, no fate question needed.

Oracle roll: What is the holy symbol? Rolling on Mythic’s Objects table.

Dangerous / Fragrant

Tarnen notices a small pouch on a cord around the body’s rotten neck. Taking it off, he notices the pouch is actually a small piece of grey cloth wrapped around what smells like some kind of dried herbs.

Tarnen makes a Customs check (72%): 72. Success!

He recognises this as the holy symbol of a local religion. Let’s roll on some Mythic tables to describe the god:

Oppose / Conflict / Loud / Monstrous / Nature

And to get its name:

Va / R

He recognises it as a symbol worn by the followers of Var, god of peace and the natural world. Var has the appearance of a huge monstrous humanoid made from mud, vines, leaves and other vegetable matter. His followers, infamous for singing extremely loud hymns in their temple services, wear a bundle of dried poisonous herbs around their necks to remind them that nature should be respected. Finding nothing else on the body, he pockets it and resolves to call in at the temple of Var in Queenstead if there is one, to ask if one of their people has recently gone missing.

End of Scene Bookkeeping

Added thread “Investigate the dead Var follower”

Chaos factor reduced to 4.
