Mythras: The Badlands Tournament - Fight 2 (Round of 8)

Introduction

Ok, we've got the second combat in the round of eight. This time it's Ploix the goblin vs Vrog the orog (think LOTR's uruk hai). But first I forgot last time that Lovar the dwarf gets his experience rolls to see if he gains any skill points. We're going to give the contestants two experience rolls each time they win a battle. In this case they need to roll equal to or greater their skill level to receive an increase of 1D4+1 points. If they roll under their skill level they still receive a 1%/1 point increase anyway.

Lovar makes an experience roll: 53 +18 Intelligence = 71 vs 70 Combat. Success!
Combat skill increased to (+1D4+1): 75%

Lovar makes an experience roll: 24 +18 Int = 42 vs 60 Brawn. Failure!
Brawn increased to (+1%): 61%

Here's where we're up to with the round of eight:

1. Lovar, Dwarf vs Traynon, Half-Orc
2. Ploix, Goblin vs Vrog, Orog
3. Hebnec, Deep Gnome vs Chaggos, Gnoll
4. Ook, Awakened Baboon vs Koz, Hobgoblin
5. Gorgo, Orc vs Fulvus, Halfling
6. Sizzk, Lizardman vs Sirioth, Dark Elf
7. Gakkomon, Chaos Beastman vs Zaine, Human Bandit
8. Vibug, Kobold vs Stighinn, Acephali

One last thing is that I didn't read the tactical movement rules properly before the first combat. This time I've read them and will apply the rules here, paying attention to the distance between the fighters at all times.

Fight 2: Ploix vs Vrog

The large and brutish Orog and the small but nimble goblin walk out across wooden boards that form bridges to the arena, a raised platform of thirty by thirty feet with a ten foot drop around the edge. At the bottom of the drop wooden stakes have been driven into the ground haphazardly.

I decided one of the fights should be unarmed combat so I can try that out. We'll do it for this one.

The Badlands overlord Baithorian nods and the fight is on. Two short green frog-men pull the boards back from the platform.

Initiative Phase

Ploix: 15
Vrog: 20

Round 1

First Cycle

Free actions:
Vrog shouts across the arena "I'll rip your tiny head from your shoulders, vermin!"
Ploix replies in a squeaky voice "Come on then son!"

Both have 3 action points.

Vrog's Turn
Vrog delays (-0 AP). He can save his AP for use later in this round.
The orog walks half his movement range across the platform towards Ploix (10').

Ploix's Turn
Ploix delays (-0 AP).
Ploix takes a few steps forward, gingerly. (5').

Second Cycle

Vrog's Turn
Vrog braces (-1 AP). He plants his big feet firmly on the platform and raises his fists in an orcish fighting stance. This will give him bonuses to resist certain special effects.

Ploix's Turn
Ploix delays again (-0 AP).
Ploix closes the distance to Vrog (5').

Third Cycle

Vrog's Turn
Vrog grapples (-1 AP). 54 vs 69 Unarmed: Success.
Ploix parries (-1 AP). 85 vs 41 Unarmed: Failure.

Differential roll: Vrog has 1 success level.

Vrog uses special effect: Choose Location (Head). Any skill rolls Ploix makes will now be hard difficulty.

As Ploix approaches Vrog, the towering orog snatches him up and gets him in a headlock, holding him under his arm.

Ploix's Turn
Ploix struggles (-1 AP). Opposed roll: Ploix rolls 5 vs Vrog's roll of 64 Unarmed skill. Success!

Ploix manages to wriggle out of Vrog's grasp like an eel and frees himself.

Fourth Cycle

Free actions: Vrog shouts "Gargh! Give me your head!"

Vrog's Turn
Vrog grapples (-1 AP). 93 vs 69 Unarmed: Failure.
Ploix parries (-1 AP). 70 vs 41 Unarmed: Failure.

Vrog makes a grab at Ploix again but he hops and skips around, laughing.

Round 2

First Cycle

Free actions: None.

Vrog's Turn
Vrog attacks (-1 AP). 91 vs 69 Unarmed: Failure.
Ploix parries (-1 AP). 31 vs 41 Unarmed: Success.

Differential roll: Ploix has 1 success level.

Ploix uses Overextend Opponent. Vrog cannot attack on his next turn.

Vrog swipes his hand at Ploix but he taunts him by doing a backflip. Vrog stumbles forward with a look of surprise on his face.

Ploix's Turn
Ploix attacks (-1 AP). 41 vs 41 Unarmed: Success (Just!).
Vrog parries (-1 AP). 55 vs 69 Unarmed: Success.
Vrog's fist is M size while Ploix's is S, so all damage is blocked.

Ploix throws a punch at Vrog who bats it out of the way.

Second Cycle

Vrog's Turn
Vrog cannot attack. He delays, saving his last action point for later.

Ploix's Turn
Ploix attacks (-1 AP). 82 vs 41 Unarmed: Failure.

Ploix swings at Vrog again, missing completely.

Third Cycle

Vrog's Turn
Vrog attacks (-1 AP). 84 vs 69 Unarmed: Failure.

Vrog tries to swing at Ploix again but the goblin is still hopping about nimbly, and dodges his fist.

Round 3

First Cycle

Ploix must make an Endurance roll to resist fatigue: 19 vs 40. Success.

Vrog's Turn
Vrog grapples (-1 AP). 52 vs 69 Unarmed: Success.
Ploix parries (-1 AP). 85 vs 41 Unarmed: Failure.

Differential roll: Vrog has 1 success level.

Vrog uses special effect: Choose Location (Head). Any skill rolls Ploix makes will now be hard difficulty.

Vrog reaches out with both hands and plucks Ploix up by his head, getting him in a headlock a second time. His skill rolls will now be hard again until he can struggle free.

Ploix's Turn
Ploix struggles (-1 AP). Opposed roll: Ploix rolls 33 vs Vrog's roll of 71 Unarmed skill. Success!

Yet again Ploix wriggles out of Vrog's grasp, skipping away and still laughing.

Vrog's Turn
Vrog attacks (-1 AP). 1 vs 69 Unarmed: Critical success!
Ploix parries (-1 AP). 61 vs 41 Unarmed: Failure.

Differential roll: Vrog has 2 success levels.

Vrog uses special effect: Choose Location (Head).
Vrog uses special effect: Maximise Damage.

Vrog does 1D4: 4 (max damage) + 1D2: 1 = 5 damage to Ploix's head, reducing it to -1 HP (Serious wound).

Ploix makes an opposed roll (His Endurance vs Vrog's attack roll of 1): 94. Failure. Ploix is knocked unconscious for 5 minutes.

Vrog has had enough of Ploix's shenanigans. He swings both his hands at Ploix's head in a fast clapping motion. Ploix realises what's about to happen and tries to duck down but he's too slow, and his head is smacked from both sides by the palms of his opponent's hands, knocking him out cold. The crowd cheers and laughs at his misfortune.

Vrog stands over his prone body and waits for a moment, but there is no indication of victory from the raised scaffolding housing Baithorian and his retinue. In response, he picks up Ploix and carries him to the edge of the platform then throws him into the pit.

Fall damage: -1HP to chest (Minor wound).
Spike damage: -6HP to left leg (Serious wound).

Ploix flies into the pit and one of the wooden stakes gashes his leg open as he flies past it, before he lands heavily on the ground, blood pouring from the wound. A chant starts up from the crowd. "Finish him! Finish him!", so Vrog climbs down into the pit and uproots one of the large wooden stakes. He impales Ploix through the chest with it and the crowd goes wild, cheering and whooping.

Looking up at the platform he sees the bugbear guardsman from last time standing there holding some kind of chainmail armour piece, so he climbs back up and is handed it. He realises it's a kind of girdle which wraps around his stomach, so he puts it on and a huge cheer goes up from the crowd again.

All that's left is to do his experience rolls.

Vrog makes an experience roll: 40 +13 Intelligence = 53 vs 69 Unarmed. Failure.
Unarmed skill increased by 1: 70%.

Vrog makes an experience roll: 90 +13 Intelligence = 113 vs 69 Athletics. Success!
Athletics increased to (+1D4+1): 71%

After the round of eight Vrog will face Lovar the dwarf in the quarter finals. A challenging combat indeed.
