Scarlet Heroes: Night's Dark Terror Part 2

Continuing my solo playthrough of the classic D&D adventure Night's Dark Terror, using the Scarlet Heroes rules.

At this point I've decided to switch from the Scarlet Heroes XP rules to Old School Essentials. I don't know, I've just always preferred the crunchiness of those rules and how long it takes to level up.

Beremud is a level 1 fighter (0 XP) and a level 3 cleric (3000 XP) - a kind of unofficial paladin. The OSE rulebook says multiclass characters track their progress towards levelling up in each class separately, so all XP awarded gets split between all their classes evenly.

This means Beremud needs 2000 XP to become a level 2 fighter, plus 6000 XP to become a level 4 cleric. He currently has 11 out of 14 Scarlet Heroes XP to reach level 5 character level. We need to convert his 11 SH XP to OSE XP and divide it between his two classes.

8000 ÷ 14 = 571 (rounded to whole number)
11 x 571 = 6281
6281 ÷ 4 (his current character level) = 1570
1 (fighter level) x 1570 = 1570
3 x 1570 (cleric level) = 4710

According to OSE's rules on prime requisite XP bonuses, Beremud will get a 5% bonus to his fighter XP and a 10% bonus to his cleric XP. I'll apply that retroactively.

So here's his current level progress converted to OSE rules:
Fighter: 1649/2000 XP to level 2
Cleric: 5181/6000 XP to level 4

Scarlet Heroes advises awarding a quarter of the standard XP from other old school games, so I'll do that.

Night's Dark Terror says all XP earned should be awarded when the party spends a night in relative safety, i.e. not camping in the wilderness.

On with the adventure!

Campaign Day 3 (Continued)

Date: Soladain (Sunday), almost midnight, 3rd of Thaumont, Spring 1000 AC

Beremud and the other survivors continue guarding the homestead of Sukiskyn, listening to the goblins in the woods chanting war chants and drumming.

Around midnight they hear the sounds of screaming coming from the woods. It sounds sort of like a woman but quite odd. They rush to the windows and see a figure wearing a yellow dress being dragged through the woods, lit by the flickering light from the goblins' fires.

"Obviously a pathetic trick." Pyotr says, but Darya is extremely shaken and begins crying, saying her friend Katarina from the Cherkass homestead has a yellow dress.

Oracle: Does Darya ignore Pytor and rush outside to try and help her "friend"? (Very unlikely): No, but "an adjustment to the physical environment" - she manages to get an upstairs window open to get a better look outside and a Red-Blade goblin shoots at her with a slingshot, wounding her before the others can get her away from the window. Kuzma the cleric casts Cure Light Wounds and fully heals her.

Later in the night another group of goblins creeps up to the treeline and starts slinging stones at the windows. Beremud shoots four out of six dead with his repeating crossbow and the others flee back into the forest.

Further into the deep night, the defenders hear the sound of large wings beating against the night air, coming closer and closer. Suddenly they see a flock of huge black bats the size of horses approaching the building. As they swoop down towards the windows the defenders panic but manage to shoot at them. Beremud, Stellios and Irina shoot three down from the sky before the surviving ones smash through the broken windows and attack Pyotr and Alfana in the room with Beremud. Beremud kills one with his mace, then upon hearing the commotion all the other defenders attempt to get into the room to attack the surviving bat.

Before they can reach the fight the lone giant vampire bat pounces on Taras's young wife Alfana, biting into her neck. It starts to suck her blood while Beremud strides up to it bellowing "No!", bringing his mace down upon its head and braining it. Unfortunately Alfana is dead.

How well does Taras take his wife's death? (D20): 13. Taras is mortified but understands he needs to be strong for the other survivors, at least until the end of the night. He spends the next couple of hours sharpening his battleaxe with a whetstone, but Beremud notices he's understandably fighting back tears.
