Mythras: Tarnen the Wanderer Part 7

Note: For some ridiculous reason Blogspot has replaced the standard Helvetica typeface with the bold weight, so my whole blog has gone bold now. I'm going to leave it like this for the moment, hoping they'll fix whatever caused it.

Seriously though, I hate this bloody stupid old site. It feels ancient and bugged to hell. I'm strongly considering switching to Substack soon if I can figure out how it works.

Tarnen, a wandering adventurer is trying to solve the mystery of how an unemployed ropemaker, Anmah Yarvan was killed on the roadside south of the city of Queenstead. Faval, the gardener from the local temple of Asoth has accompanied him to a small forest outside the city to find a mysterious ranger who might be able to uncover clues as to what killed Yarvan.

Scene 5 (Continued) | Tanglewood Forest, The Downs | Year 645, 2nd of 7th Month | Chaos Factor: 5

We begin this session in combat with the wolf.

Entering combat!

In the midst of the gale, Tarnen swings his sword at the wolf as it rushes at him, but the blade goes wide and misses its mark. The wolf then turns on Faval, latching onto his leg with its jaws, but his thick traveller's robe protects him and he shakes it off, swinging his staff at it as he does so. While the wolf is distracted by Faval's desperate swinging, Tarnen flanks it and chops off its head in one mighty blow from his sword.

Combat Log

Note: I realised this time round that since these animals are underlings they should have a fifth of the HP that a standard one has. I've adjusted the wolf's HP but it means it has 1 HP on most of its body parts, and only 2 HP on its forequarters and hindquarters. I might have to adjust this rule in future.

Initiative Phase

Tarnen: 24
Wolf: 14
Faval: 13

Round 1

First Cycle

Free actions:

Faval wards location: Chest (Walking staff)
Tarnen wards location: Chest (Buckler)

Tarnen's Turn
Tarnen attacks with longsword (-1 AP). The gale makes all checks hard (-20%).
83 vs 52% 41% combat skill: Miss

Wolf's Turn
Who does the wolf attack? (50% chance of either character)
59: Faval
Wolf attacks Faval with bite (-1 AP)
3 vs 59% 47% combat skill: Critical!
Faval is passive blocking (ward location: chest) so he doesn't roll to parry.
Wolf rolls damage: 1-2 = No damage on left leg.

Faval's Turn
Faval attacks wolf with walking staff (-1 AP)
70 vs 24% 20% combat skill: Miss

Second Cycle

Tarnen's Turn

Tarnen attacks with longsword (-1 AP)
71 vs 52% 41% combat skill: Miss

Wolf's Turn
Wolf attacks Faval with bite (-1 AP)
71 vs 59% 47% combat skill: Miss

Faval's Turn
Faval attacks wolf with walking staff (-1 AP)
65 vs 24% 20% combat skill: Miss

Tarnen's Turn
Tarnen attacks with longsword (-1 AP)
40 vs 52% 41% combat skill: Hit

Wolf cannot parry (0 AP)

Differential roll: Tarnen has 1 success level (Success vs failure)

Tarnen uses special effect: Choose Location (Head)

Tarnen rolls damage: 3+3=6. 1 absorbed by armour. Total 5.

The wolf is decapitated.

End of combat.

"Poor thing." Faval says, looking at the cub near the headless corpse of its mother.
"Let's go," Tarnen replies, "There's nothing we can do for it anyway." They head on down the trail deeper into the woods as the gale starts to die down.

Delve the Depths
Tarnen makes a Perception check (30%): 50. Failure.
Faval makes a Perception check (36%): 42. Failure.
Weak hit: Mark progress and reveal a danger
Site progress: 9/10

Reveal a Danger
76: A discovery undermines or complicates your quest.

Oracle roll: Truce slowly

The pair reach a clearing and hear a wolf howling nearby. Several wolves slowly emerge from the trees and surround them. I'm going to make another opposed roll (Influence vs Willpower) for Tarnen and Faval. If one of them succeeds the wolf pack will decide not to attack them and will not bother them again on this delve. If they fail they'll have to fight the two strongest ones.

Opposed roll: Influence vs Willpower (Tarnen 47% vs Wolf 44%)
Tarnen: 23 (Success)
Wolf: 13 (Success with better result)

Opposed roll: Influence vs Willpower (Faval 26% vs Wolf 44%)
Faval: 42 (Failure with better result)
Wolf: 75 (Failure)

I'm going to treat this as a success since this delve is getting pretty long now. They're on 9/10 progress which if we were playing Ironsworn would mean they were almost guaranteed to succeed at a Locate Your Objective progress move, but how can we recreate that in Mythras?

I'll do a Perception check for each of them and as long as no one rolls 96-100 (always a failure in Mythras), they'll reach the ranger's cabin.

Locate Your Objective
Tarnen makes a Perception check (30%): 7. Success.
Faval makes a Perception check (36%): 93. Failure.

Tarnen and Faval finally arrive at a small cabin in a clearing by a stream, with smoke rising from the chimney.

End of scene 5. Chaos factor rises to 6.

Scene 6 | Tanglewood Forest, The Downs | Year 645, 2nd of 7th Month | Chaos Factor: 6

Testing the Expected Scene
Expected: Tarnen and Faval meet the ranger and ask for help tracking the killer.
D10 roll: 1. Within chaos factor and odd number: Altered scene.

I go with a likely alteration: The ranger already knows why they are here.

Tarnen approaches the cabin door as the sun begins to set between the tangled trees. Suddenly the door springs open.

Ask the oracle: Is the ranger a man? (50/50)
46: Yes

Is the ranger a demihuman? (Very unlikely)
30: Yes

Rolling a D6: Half-Elf

Description from the descriptor tables: Kindly shocking

Wow, that's a unique description for an NPC. I'm going to leave it there for this session and create this new character next time. I'll do him as a full player character because he might end up joining Tarnen permanently. I'm open to the idea of getting a small party together.

We'll award 1 experience roll this time as Tarnen didn't use many skills, but as always he gets +1 from his experience modifier.

Experience Roll: Perception
D100 result: 53 (+16 INT) = 69 vs 30% Perception skill.
Perception increases by 1D4+1% = 4%
New Perception skill: 34%

Experience Roll: Influence
D100 result: 53 (+16 INT) = 39 vs 47% Perception skill.
Influence increases by 1%
New Influence skill: 48%
