Death in Space: Velocity Cursed - Session 2

Introduction

Last time we created Mateo Rover, a tow trucker who just bought a used ship. Next we need to work out the details of that ship.

Hub Creation

Rover's hub (player base) will be a ship, The Kulakov.

Defence Rating (DR): 11
Max Condition: 5
Frame Integrity: 100%
Max Fuel: 6
Power Source: Standard chemical engine (slow)
Output Power: 3
Core Functions: Bridge, mess, crew quarters, life support
Modules: None
Background: Unknown. No serial number. Fragmented log hidden deep in computer system.
Quirks: Interior painted in luminous colours charged by UV light.

The Kulakov has no weapons and only the most basic functions, not even a cargo bay. What's more, it needs repairs and fuel.

Welcome to the Ring

After reading the rulebook I realised the starter adventure, Welcome to the Ring, would be a perfect first adventure for Rover. It's very open ended and doesn't railroad players or push them to complete it in a certain way, so it would work well with Mythic Game Master Emulator 2nd Edition, which I'll be using to run the game. Without further ado, let's just get right into it so I can start playing.

The Iron Ring is the centre of civilisation in the Tenebris system. A huge ramshackle space station made up of thousands of small stations and ships salvaged from the Gem War and haphazardly welded together, it takes the shape of a ring that slowly spins around Inauro, the moon of the gas giant Gliess Gallo. Inauro was the primary source for gems during the gem rush, and its surface is now littered with abandoned mines, huge rusted mining machines and empty settlements.

Meanwhile the Iron Ring rotates above it, thousands of rogues and scavengers crammed into crowded living conditions, all trying to hustle their way out to a better life elsewhere. Mateo Rover has arrived in Aurum 80, a district of the Aurum sector. The Kulakov is docked at airlock 13C in the docking bay, useless until he can refuel it and have it repaired by mechanics. One other reason he was able to get it so cheap is that he had to take on the docking fee debt of 500 holos, owed to a salvage crew.

Mythic Prep

As always there are a few things to set up for Mythic GME. The chaos factor will start at 5 out of 10. For the threads list we have three threads:
  • Deal with the debt
  • Repair the Kulakov
  • Refuel the Kulakov
I'm not listing "Find out what happened to the girl from the wrecked ship" as that will be the next adventure.

For the characters list we only have the salvage crew so far. I'm going to list them as one entry because since there are three of them that would mean the crew would be three times as likely to come up as anyone else, and they operate as a group anyway.

Scene 1

The Docking Bay, Aurum 80, The Iron Ring, Tenebris System
Chaos Factor: 5
Threads: Deal with the debt / Repair the Kulakov / Refuel the Kulakov
Characters: Salvage crew
Expected Scene: N/A since this is the start of the adventure.

Mateo stands in the docking bay of Aurum 80 having just inspected his new ship, the Kulakov. He checks his satchel to make sure the tools of his trade are still there, unstolen: an electric multi-tool, a battered tablet computer, a fusion welder and a roll of duct tape. In one pocket he finds just 17 holos. Not even enough to buy two days' worth of awful compressed food and a bed for the night. Checking another pocket he finds his small notebook and pen - the book of grudges, in which he writes the names of people who have wronged him.

He starts to walk through the crowd towards the door of the docking connector that leads to the nearby common area but then a voice calls out his name. He sees two men and a woman approaching him. "I'm Ezra," one of the men says. He wears a fake leather jacket and dirty jeans. "This is Elizi and Gonza." He motions to the woman, slim with long dark blonde hair, dressed in a purple jumpsuit, and the man who sports a buzzcut and worn out white vest with black workwear trousers and big boots.

"You're subletting that bay from us. Five hundred holos you owe us, and the docking fee's fifty a day. When you got the money come find us in Tsurutsuru's bar through there." He nods to the docking connector and then they all start to head in that direction, before he turns around. "Don't keep us waiting too long though or I'll have to let Gonza do what he's been itching to do since the moment he saw you." Gonza looks at Mateo with cold, dead eyes.
"Sure thing, pal. I'll get the holos to you asap." Mateo replies, thinking about the 17 poker chip-sized tokens in his satchel.

No sooner have they disappeared into the crowd heading to the doorway than someone else calls out "Mateo!". What now? He thinks, turning around to see who it is.

This is an old friend of the PCs, according to the adventure notes. Let's roll 'em up.

Mira Lamassu
Background: Female zero-G fighter
First Impressions: Peaceful, soft spoken. Soft, gentle movements.
Looks: Robe covered in asymmetric patterns.

"Mira?" Mateo says, stunned.
"Yeah it's me." She replies. "Sorry for spooking you, I watched you talking to those goons and wanted to surprise you." Mira Lamassu, semi-famous athlete from the Noctis sector of the Ring. He'd met he years before when he towed her shuttle back to the ring from out in the middle of nowhere.
"What are you doing here?" Mateo asks.
"I live here now. Enjoying my retirement from the ring." He'd seen her fight. She used to glide around slowly as if she was scared of her opponent then lash out like a viper when they went in for the kill. "I heard you bought a new ship."
"Yeah but I got screwed. It's a piece of shit, it don't work and I got myself into debt to that salvage crew you just saw."

Mira explains the situation in Aurum 80 to Mateo. Two rival gangs are vying for control of the district: The Passel, who control the power supply to Aurum 80, and Parliament who run the computing systems and life support. Tension has been building for weeks and it's all coming to a head now. Both want each other's assets.

The UWA is a gem mining union down on the surface of Inauro that also counts most of the workers in Aurum 80 as its members. Suro "Thorn" Ragosa is its leader and she's run out of patience with the gangs. In four hours a shuttle will arrive carrying Thorn and several heavily armed enforcers ready to silence the two gangs once and for all if they can't come to an agreement.

"So you picked a hell of a time to show up here." Mira concludes. "Then again, maybe you can do some favours for one side or the other and get what you need for your ship."
"And what about you Mira? What's your angle here?" Mateo asks. Mira smiles.

The book says the old friend definitely has a problem they need help with, so let's roll for it using the tables. Disclaimer: I rerolled a couple of times on the contract generator table because it's geared towards jobs that you need a working ship to do. Eventually I decided to pick "Repair" for something easy as a first mission for Mateo, since his Tech ability is 2.

//Repair prototype for union worker

"I promised I'd help this (D6: 6. Female) union gal here in Aurum 80. She's got hold of some kind of busted gadget that needs fixing. I'll make it worth your while if you can do it for her."
"Busted gadget? What is it?"
"I dunno, that's all she said." Mira shrugs.
"Ok, so what do I get in return?"
"I've been busy here, I'm in good with Parliament and The Passel. I reckon I could get you an audience with either Parliament's boss Monotone Tynall, or The Passel's, Roy Mirra."
"Ok, ok. Where's this woman then?" Mateo asks.

(D100: Gobalsky's Moonshine) "She said to find her at Gobalsky's Moonshine stall in the common area through there." Mira nods towards the docking connector that the salvage crew left through. "Her name's Ezri Tungertok. When you want to find me again I'll probably be at The Tsurutsuru, it's the biggest bar in the common area."

Mateo thanks Mira and heads towards the common area to look for this moonshine stall.

End of Scene 1
Update Lists: Added "Repair Ezri's prototype" to threads list. Added Mira Lamassu, Ezri Tungertok, The Passel and Parliament to characters list.
Adjust Chaos Factor: Reduced by -1 to 4 as Mateo was mostly in control of the scene.
