The Ruined Keep, A Dungeon Crawl Classics Funnel: Part 3

The Adventure Continues

Continuing the funnel adventure. Our group of peasants keep exploring the exterior of the ruins.

Turn 8
The peasants go back to the upper courtyard and choose...

D3: 1. The first door of the east wall.

This is a ruined old kitchen with a large fireplace. The room is filled with rusty pots and pans, rotten tables and chairs and other furniture. While exploring the characters uncover a poisonous adder.

Who finds it?
D14: 10. Bara the soldier.

Bara cries out "Snake!" as the adder crawls out from under a smashed up wooden cabinet, but Tanti the dock worker rushes over, new shortsword in hand and chops it in half instantly. The others all slap him on the back and congratulate him, then they return to the courtyard.

Turn 9
They go through the other doorway in the east wall which leads to an old room covered in cobwebs. Searching, they find a scrap of paper with a fragment of text on it:

"...lies beneath the north tower in the Crystal Grotto."

"Maybe it's talking about the Oracle!" shouts Bara.

DC10 Int check: Ibar passes.

"Remember we found that trapdoor in the floor of the north tower?" Ibar, a halfling vagrant points out.
"Shut up you little tramp!" Tariad, a snooty halfling moneylender snaps at him.
"No hang on," Olnod, a wainwright says. "Maybe the little fella's onto something. If we can't find another way down there let's go back to the village and find a locksmith, bring him here."
"What village?" Kali says. We're almost all that's left of it. Gavin the locksmith moved away weeks ago when his business failed."
"Aye, who needs locks when no one's got anything worth nicking anymore?" muses Nechta, an elven sage.
"Well some other village then." Olnod replies, leading the others outside.

Turn 10
They head for the room in the southwest corner of the courtyard. It seems to be an old kennel for dogs, long disused now. A skeleton lies on the floor in chainmail.

Is it still usable? (75% chance)
No.

Covered in rust, the armour is useless. However the peasants find a key on a cord around its neck. "That could be the key to that trapdoor!" shouts Olnod the wainwright.

DC8 Int check to search the kennel:
Passed.

They look under a ruined bed and find a mouldy bag with 35 copper pieces, a potion of haste and two potions of healing. They share it all out then head to the north tower.
